It’s that time of year again. The days get longer, the streets get twinklier, and inflatable Santas start popping up in yards around Melbourne.
If you’re keen for a classic Christmas moment (picnic rug, snacks, slightly-off-key singing and all), the friendly team at Woodards have put together a list of all the family-friendly Christmas Carols happening across our local suburbs in December.
ASCOT VALE & ESSENDON
Moonee Valley’s Carols in Queens Park is the definition of easy Christmas fun – kids’ activities first, then the main carols concert once the sun starts to go down.
BLACKBURN
Whitehorse locals (and nearby Blackburn families) can settle in for Whitehorse Carols, with that classic big-community-event feeling – think entertainment, festive fun, and plenty to keep the kids happy.
CAMBERWELL
Carols in Canterbury Gardens is a crowd favourite for a reason: it’s easy, local, and built for families (picnic rug encouraged, singalong energy optional-but-rewarding).
CARLTON & THE INNER NORTH
For the full Melbourne tradition, Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight at Sidney Myer Music Bowl is iconic. It’s big, it’s polished, and it delivers that proper “this is Christmas in Melbourne” feeling.
CARNEGIE & BENTLEIGH
Glen Eira locals can kick off the season with a proper “bring-the-kids-and-a-blanket” night at Carols in the Park. Expect family activities early, plenty of festive atmosphere, and the kind of community vibe that makes you remember why you love living local.
COBURG & PASCOE VALE
Merri-bek’s Carols by the Lake at Coburg Lake is a classic: easy to get to, super family-friendly, and always a great “bring friends, bring snacks, stay a while” kind of night.
CROYDON
Maroondah Carols is a big, well-run community night with plenty going on – plus fireworks, which always helps everyone commit to staying until the end.
ELSTERNWICK
If you’re after something a little cosier (less “park stage”, more “festive tunes and a good night out”), this Elsternwick Christmas celebration brings the end-of-year energy with live music and a relaxed set-up.
HEIDELBERG
Banyule’s carols are a great option for Heidelberg locals – close enough to count as “local”, big enough to feel like a proper event night.
KEILOR
Keilor East locals can keep it community-focused with St Peter’s Christmas Carols – picnic first, then carols, in a very family-and-friends kind of way.
LILYDALE
Lilydale’s Carols in the Park is a cheerful, family-friendly local tradition – easy to attend, easy to enjoy, and very “this is why we love our suburb”.
MACEDON RANGES
Want carols with a Macedon Ranges twist? Head to Hanging Rock Winery for Carols by the Barrels – a scenic evening where festive singalongs meet vineyard views (and very tempting snacks).
MANNINGHAM
Manningham Carols at Ruffey Lake is the full festive experience: performances, food, family activities, and a fireworks finish that makes it feel like a proper end-of-year celebration.
MOUNT WAVERLEY & OAKLEIGH
Monash Carols brings the full family-friendly package – music, community atmosphere, and plenty of room to spread out and make a night of it.
PENINSULA
For a big festive night by the bay, Sorrento’s Christmas Festival and Carols is the one – market vibes, carols, and that “this is officially Christmas now” feeling.
SOUTH YARRA
If you want a big (but still local-feeling) community singalong, Carols at Como Park is a lovely South Yarra tradition. It’s easy to bring the whole family along, set up a picnic spot, and soak up that festive end-of-year buzz.
YARRA VALLEY
If you’re up for a Yarra Valley twist, Carols at Helen’s Hill pairs festive singalongs with those rolling-hills vineyard views.
That’s your December sorted. Pick a night (or two), pack a picnic rug, throw a jumper in the car and get there a little early to claim a good patch of grass. Whether you’re chasing big festive energy or a smaller local singalong, Christmas carols are one of the easiest ways to soak up the season and feel properly part of the community.
