School Holiday Survival Guide: Melbourne Winter Edition 2026

Interesting for: Buyer, Investor, Rental Provider, Renter, Seller, Lifestyle

The mid-year break has a way of sneaking up on you. One minute you're packing lunchboxes, the next you've got two weeks to fill, a forecast full of grey, and kids who've declared they're "bored" by 9am on day one.

Good news: Melbourne does winter school holidays properly. The cold just sends the fun indoors – and what stays outside comes with fairy lights and hot chocolate. The team at Woodards have pulled together a suburb-by-suburb survival guide to the July 2026 break, with a mix of free and paid options across the areas we know best.

The Victorian winter school holidays run from Saturday 27 June to Sunday 12 July 2026, with Term 3 back on Monday 13 July. One tip worth banking first: since 1 January 2026, public transport is free for everyone under 18 with a Youth myki (just a one-off $5 for the card), and statewide half-price fares run until the new year. A day out has never been cheaper.
